A Journey through Japan's Sakura Season: Following the Flowers

A Journey through Japan's Sakura Season: Following the Flowers

Cherry blossom or Sakura season is soon approaching from mid-March to mid-April, and I'm sure many Indian tourists have already booked their tickets for Sakura viewing in Japan. I have been visiting Japan 2-3 times a year for the past 25 years, but the sight of the Sakura tree still brings a smile to my face.

Sakura viewing is not just an activity or season in Japan; it's a cultural tradition. The Sakura season serves as a poignant reminder of life's transience and the importance of cherishing fleeting moments. As the petals fall like gentle snowflakes, they evoke a sense of awe and wonder, leaving an indelible impression on all who witness their beauty.

The Hanami parties are meticulously planned with finger foods, bento boxes a beautiful desserts. In order to enjoy this tradition, the visitors need to book a slot under their favorite tree in the park for a duration of around 2 hours. I have experienced that respect for others is paramount in Japan, and adhering to decorum is essential.

One of Tokyo's best places to view cherry blossoms is Shinjuku Gyoen, boasting around 1000 Sakura trees of almost 65 different varieties. Last year, Shinjuku Gyoen opened for nighttime viewing for the first time, offering a magical experience with fluffy pink and white flowers illuminated by soulful lights. There were many vegan and sustainable food options available, though I have to say that the queues were long. I would suggest the visitors to bring your own picnic basket and mat in order to enjoy the view comfortably.

Other spots for night time Sakura viewing include Chiyoda Sakura (Matsuri festival) and Meguro River in Naka Meguro, a chic neighborhood known for its cherry blossom-lined canals. Cruising along the Meguro River while sipping hot coffee and enjoying the Sakura petals floating in the waterways is definitely an ethereal experience. there are many other parks in Sakura Tokyo which will be a blessing to your eyes. Some of my favorites are Ueno Park, Chidorigafuchi, Meguro River, Yasukuni Shrine.

While cherry blossoms are the highlights of the place, other flowering gardens in Japan are equally captivating. The Nezu Shrine offers picturesque views of azalea flowers, while Showa Kinen Park boasts stunning tulips. Renting a bicycle or utilizing buggy services can help explore these vast gardens comfortably.

In addition to Sakura, mid April is also the bloom time for Wisteria flowers in Ashigaya park where there is a Wisteria tunnel offering a breathtaking sight. My favorite part there is spending my time while sipping on Indian tea which I carry in a Japanese made Tiger flask where ever I go. As the place is so mesmerizing, I can't help but try to the beautiful sights with my camera.

This journey through Japan's Sakura season is not just about cherry blossoms but also about immersing oneself in Japan's rich floral culture. Whether it's enjoying a Hanami party or cruising along cherry blossom-lined canals, every experience is unique and unforgettable. I really would recommend everyone to experience this once in their lives :)
